ADA Accessible Fixture Heights & Mounting Requirements
Toilet Height & Positioning
Minimum Stall Size According to ADA Standards, the minimum clear floor dimensions for a wheelchair-accessible toilet compartment are:
✅ Seat Height:
Must be between 17 and 19 inches above the finished floor.
✅ Lateral Positioning:
The toilet should be placed so that its centerline is 16 to 18 inches from the side wall.

Rationale:
A toilet seat within this height range supports safe and comfortable transfers for users, particularly those with limited strength or balance. Proper positioning minimizes the effort required to shift from a wheelchair to the toilet.
Lavatory (Sink) Installation
A full 60-inch turning circle is required within the restroom to allow a wheelchair user to make a complete turn. This turning space may be provided within the compartment or in the common area of a single-user restroom.
✅ Mounting Height:
The rim or countertop must be no higher than 34 inches above the floor
✅ Knee and Toe Clearance:
There must be a minimum clear space of 30 inches by 48 inches in front of the sink, with a knee clearance of at least 27 inches high and a toe clearance of at least 9 inches.
Rationale:
Low mounting heights and clear spaces in front of sinks enable wheelchair users to approach and use the lavatory independently. Adequate clearance prevents body collisions with the counter and allows for proper maneuvering.
