ADA Accessible Signage Requirements
Tactile and Braille Signage
Restroom signs must include the following:
✅ Raised Characters: Raised, non-shadowed letters (usually 5/8″ to 2″ tall) that are in a simple, sans-serif typeface.
✅ Braille: Grade 2 Braille must be provided below the text.
✅ Contrast and Finishing: High contrast between characters and the background, with a non-glare finish to aid tactile and visual recognition.
Rationale
Accurate signage is vital for individuals with visual impairments. Proper tactile and braille signage ensures that all users can independently locate and identify restrooms, which is key for safety and dignified access.
Mounting and Placement of ADA Signage
✅ Height: The baseline of the lowest tactile character must be at least 48 inches above the floor, while the top must not exceed 60 inches above the floor.
✅ Location: Signs must be installed on the latch side of the door (or the nearest adjacent wall if that isn't possible) to be easily reachable and not obstructed by the door swing.
Rationale:
Correct sign placement and mounting height ensure that the information is accessible to all users, including the visually impaired. Consistent placement across facilities also promotes ease of navigation.
